About

Sixteen-year-old Miranda Merchant is great at science. . .and not so great with boys. After major drama with her boyfriend and (now ex) best friend, she's happy to spend the summer on small, mysterious Selkie Island, helping her mother sort out her late grandmother's estate. There, Miranda finds new friends and an island with a mysterious, mystical history, presenting her with facts her logical, scientific mind can't make sense of. She also meets Leo, who challenges everything she thought she knew about boys, friendship. . .and reality.

Review

This book is so refreshing, it produces all the vivid visions of summer. We meet Miranda, a girl who, with her mother, will be spending her summer on Selkie Island. There she will discover secrets about her family and herself, while staying in her gradmothers house. Selkie Island is a solid basis for the book, somewhere i would like to go to. It is overflowing with lore, about the sea folk and the history of how some, are still there looking like normal people, but with extra beauty. Miranda meets a range of different characters, the majority of which having differences in interests to her. She likes science, likes to work things out realisticly. Whereas the other people summering on Selkie like fashion and makeup, they seem to be the typical type of people to stay there. But then she meets Leo, a local boy who seems to share similar interests to her, always enjoying the beach and not all that interested in how much makeup she has on. He sees her for who she is, and she in return, sees him for who he his. Their relationship grows, with some ups and downs, as she tries to learn more about him, trying to push aside her usual way of doing things, wondering if she can believe. This book is gorgeous, with characters that make you smile, descriptions so beautiful that you feel you're experiencing it, thrilling mystery and romance to satisfy lovers of this genre, and lore that will fascinate.
